Densho Runs Qumulo Data-Aware Scale-Out NAS in Production to Capture History of Japanese Internment

Densho, a Seattle-based nonprofit preserving the history of Japanese Americans incarcerated during WWII, was spending too much time and money managing an aging, complex storage environment. Its legacy SAN and NAS systems were hard to manage, lacked visibility into data usage, and made it difficult to scale as the organization’s growing archive of photos, documents, and oral histories expanded. Densho turned to Qumulo and its modern scale-out storage to solve these storage concerns.

Qumulo implemented four QC24 hybrid storage appliances with Qumulo Care support, giving Densho real-time visibility into file usage, capacity, and performance while enabling “pay as you grow” scaling. The result was dramatic: storage management dropped to less than five minutes a week, upgrades occurred with no downtime, and IT was freed to focus on higher-value work. Densho also praised Qumulo’s rapid two-week release cycle and proactive support, which helped keep the system evolving with its needs.
