What Happens When You Ask Students To Write a Story Collaboratively Using Quip? Magic with a Capital “M”

Trinity Valley School faced the common classroom challenge of teaching collaborative writing while keeping all students engaged and accountable. Seventh-grade teacher Tina Harper introduced Quip as a collaborative writing and messaging tool on iPads to replace traditional individual word-processing, aiming to improve student collaboration, teacher oversight, and timely feedback.

Quip was implemented so student groups could co-author myths in real time, use built-in messaging to ask questions, and let the teacher view timestamped contributions for accountability—even while offsite. The result was higher-quality myths than in previous years, broad student adoption of the Quip app at home and on mobile devices, and overwhelmingly positive feedback from students who marked the Quip project their most engaging unit activity; Quip also enabled faster, more frequent teacher feedback and clear visibility into each student’s work.
