Creating valid and reliable high-stakes assessments for doctors in remote rural areas

The Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) needed to provide valid, reliable high‑stakes summative assessments and ongoing education to doctors living and working in remote communities without forcing them to travel to metropolitan centers. To meet the challenge of delivering exams locally and minimizing time away from practice, ACRRM selected Questionmark in 2007 to support online delivery of its assessments.

Questionmark’s platform enabled ACRRM to develop and run three‑hour, 125‑question MCQ exams delivered simultaneously across many local sites (for example, large administrations of 50 candidates run across 40+ locations with local proctors), eliminating long travel and lost work time. Adoption of Questionmark Live browser‑based authoring also let rural clinicians and editors create, review and version questions remotely, improving question quality, assessment integrity and the college’s ability to scale high‑stakes testing.
