American Electric Power - Customer Case Study

American Electric Power (AEP), one of the largest U.S. electric utilities, needed a reliable way to assess and manage regulatory safety and environmental knowledge plus technical skills for operators, mechanics and maintenance staff across its power plants. To meet recurring compliance and competency needs AEP adopted Questionmark (using Questionmark Secure) to deliver standardized assessments built from field-written questions and to capture subject-matter expertise before staff retire.

Questionmark was used to build a tagged item bank of about 10,000 questions and deliver 100–150 question assessments every three months in roughly 10 plants (with plans to double coverage in 2007). Weekly SME reviews, Excel-based import tools, and Questionmark Secure enabled easy question creation, targeted assessments, coaching reports for learners, and single-attempt delivery; maintenance staff must pass specific tests for promotion, and the program has measurably centralized knowledge management and assessment across AEP’s fleet.
