School system deploys Windows images to more than 15,000 laptops across 27 sites in six weeks

A U.S. public school system serving more than 15,000 students across 27 sites faced a yearly IT bottleneck: imaging roughly 3,000 new and 12,000 existing laptops over a short summer window. The prior process could take nearly three hours per device and relied on error-prone manual steps (naming, assignment, admin rights), forcing IT to spend the entire break on imaging.

The district implemented Quest KACE Systems Deployment Appliance and Systems Management Appliance, using RSAs, centralized imaging and PowerShell-driven post-install scripts to automate naming, domain join and asset assignment. The result: imaging throughput jumped to about 1,200 laptops per day, average deployment time fell to under one hour, 15,349 machines were imaged in six weeks, and human errors and summer workload were dramatically reduced.
