One-person IT department automates patching, security, ticketing, inventory, remote access and backup

Edison High School, a private school in Portland serving about 120 students and 40 staff, faced an outdated, under-managed IT environment overseen by a single director of educational technology. Servers were nearly 12 years old, backups were unreliable or unused, and manual patching and security consumed roughly 80% of the IT workday — a problem made more urgent by the shift to remote learning.

The school implemented Quest KACE Systems Management Appliance and Desktop Authority for centralized patching, security, remote access and endpoint management, and deployed Quest QoreStor with Wasabi for deduplicated cloud backups. This automation consolidated multiple tools into two products, cut backup storage from about 7–8 TB to 1.6 TB (≈$30/month), reduced patching and security from most of the day to a quick status check, and freed the lone IT staffer to focus on other priorities while better supporting remote learners.
