Consultant migrates 80TB of data across 140K SharePoint sites

COWI, a Danish engineering and consulting firm of 6,700 employees, needed to move from SharePoint 2013 to SharePoint Online to eliminate on‑prem hosting costs while preserving a seamless digital employee experience. The project involved migrating 80 TB of data across 140,000 departmental and project sites—many actively used for business‑critical work—so long outages were not an option and document versions, metadata and user permissions had to be preserved.

Working with Quest partner ProActive and Metalogix Content Matrix, COWI executed an automated, phased migration with incremental deltas and minimal downtime. The scalable solution ran up to 70 concurrent migrations (about 1 TB/day), completed in 18 months with project sites going live in four months, preserved security and versions, required very little manual remediation, and enabled COWI to maintain productivity while eliminating on‑prem hosting costs.
