Cancer research body protects invaluable data

The National Cancer Registry of Ireland, which collects and analyzes nationwide cancer incidence, treatment and survival data, needed to better protect its invaluable and sometimes hard-to-recreate research data. Their legacy approach relied on four different backup tools, tape-based offsite copies and limited nightly backups, which created long backup windows, slow restores (hours or days) and significant administrative overhead — leaving the Registry exposed to potential data loss and operational disruption.

By deploying Quest Rapid Recovery through its disaster‑recovery partner, the Registry moved to fast incremental snapshots and virtual standby machines, enabling backups as often as every 15 minutes, near‑instant restores and continuous replication of the entire site using aggressive deduplication and compression. The result: recovery times dropped from hours or days to seconds, full-site disaster recovery is now achievable, administrative complexity was reduced by consolidating multiple tools into one, and the IT team achieved stronger RPOs/RTOs at comparable cost.
