Somerset Council, one of England’s largest unitary authorities, was created in April 2023 by merging five councils with vastly different IT estates. The IT teams had to consolidate 7,000 user accounts, multiple Active Directory domains and a range of Microsoft 365 workloads under a fixed one‑year deadline while staff were working remotely.

Using in‑house expertise alongside partner Content+Cloud and Quest’s On Demand Migration, the team consolidated AD and migrated Teams, SharePoint, Exchange, OneDrive and more with overnight jobs to avoid disruption. The 12‑month project was 95% automated, preserved user profiles, calendars and mail routing, handled Teams chat and archives efficiently, and delivered a seamless experience that improved collaboration and security.
