A global organization drives synergy by merging Microsoft 365 and Active Directory

Japan Tobacco International (JTI), a global tobacco company with about 46,000 employees operating in 130+ markets, had run its domestic and international businesses on separate IT infrastructures for more than 20 years. In 2020 JTI faced a complex tenant-to-tenant and Active Directory consolidation: migrating 17,000 Japanese users into a single global Microsoft 365 and AD environment across multiple languages and time zones without disrupting access or productivity.

JTI engaged Quest’s migration tools plus Quest Professional Services and Migration‑as‑a‑Service to design, pilot and execute a phased migration, coordinating global teams and handoffs via Microsoft Teams. The consolidation increased collaboration and operational synergy, strengthened security and standards compliance, created a foundation for future optimization, and lowered operating costs by enabling decommissioning of the legacy tenant.
