Powered by data The E.ON journey to sustainable energy

E.ON, one of Europe’s largest energy suppliers (72,000 employees, 51 million customers), set out to digitalize operations and advance its sustainability goals but faced a highly heterogeneous data landscape across 13 countries — thousands of applications (SAP, Azure, Oracle, legacy systems), one million smart meters and 900,000 decentralized renewable plants. To maintain energy continuity, meet regulatory requirements and accelerate decarbonization, E.ON needed better data governance, discoverability and business context so data scientists and engineers could find and use the right data quickly.

E.ON selected erwin by Quest to drive its Data Readiness (DaRe) program, deploying erwin Data Intelligence for automated metadata management, lineage, impact analysis and auto-configuration of data pipelines, later adding erwin Data Modeler and building the E.ON Data House. The initiative scaled from a two-person team to 30+ experts and 600 users, delivered a common business vocabulary and data catalog, and unlocked measurable value: more than €2 million identified impact in 24 months, ~30% savings on external data management costs, a 50% reduction in time spent on data discovery, and several million euros of additional revenue through faster time-to-data and improved AI readiness.
