How To Scale New Products With A Data Lake On AWS And Qubole

TiVo collects terabytes of viewership, purchase, and location data from millions of homes and needed to make that data available to network and advertising partners with widely varying, rapidly changing reporting requirements. Its legacy ETL-to-Redshift/MySQL pipeline forced engineers to build new ETLs for each request, driving up development time, costs, and bottlenecking report delivery, so TiVo sought a scalable, cost-effective way to store all data types and automate ingestion, processing, and aggregation.

TiVo built a data lake on Amazon S3, adopted Presto as its query engine, and used Qubole’s Big Data Activation Platform to manage clusters, automate scaling, run shareable notebooks, and audit queries. The solution streamlined and automated reporting, cut developer effort and compute costs, enabled self-service, highly customized reports for partners, and improved targeted advertising and product insights at scale.
