South East council strengthens fleet efficiency with telematics system

Guildford Borough Council’s Fleet and Waste Operations manages refuse, recycling and street‑sweeping across about 100 square miles for 130,000 residents, running a fleet of more than 150 vehicles. Seeking to modernise entrenched operations and improve route planning and record keeping, the council trialled telematics systems and selected Quartix because it provided a straightforward, automatically‑generated daily tracking log and a managed service that met the fleet’s needs.

The council fitted 104 Quartix tracking units and now receives emailed daily reports with long‑term database access and division‑specific log access. The system delivered several thousand pounds of annual savings through better route planning (reduced mileage, labour and maintenance), faster, more accurate customer responses, improved lone worker oversight and even rapid recovery of a stolen £60,000 road sweeper — outcomes that earned full staff and union acceptance and led to recommendations to other organisations.
