A Quark Case Study
The Kentucky Kernel, the University of Kentucky’s student-run daily newspaper with a readership of more than 30,000, needed to modernize its fast-paced production workflow to keep up with daily print deadlines, improve design quality, and free staff time for stronger journalism and web coverage. As a daily newsroom that must often meet late game-night deadlines, the Kernel sought a system that would speed collaboration and streamline editing and layout.
By self-integrating Quark Publishing Platform with QuarkXPress and QuarkCopyDesk, the Kernel created a collaborative, trackable workflow with native Photoshop and Illustrator support and a Web Client for remote editing. The change shaved hours off production, moved nights from 2 a.m. to around 9 p.m., allowed the team to work ahead, improve design and web content, reduce costs, and ultimately deliver higher‑quality, award‑winning journalism.
