BMJ (British Medical Journal) Launches A Best-In-Class Ipad Tablet Edition with App Studio

BMJ, one of the world’s oldest and most respected medical journals, faced the challenge of modernizing its weekly print title for a digital, on-demand audience while preserving the journal’s authority and reaching international readers without shipping delays. With a core print circulation of 120,000, BMJ needed a way to deliver richer, interactive content and maintain institutional subscription models within app-store constraints.

Using App Studio and its existing XML workflow, BMJ launched a feature-rich iPad edition—combining video, audio, live newsfeeds, searchable content and one-click citations—while offering the app free to BMA members and paid via Apple subscriptions for others. The result: about 44,000 downloads, 300,000 page views per month, widespread positive reviews, a 4+-star App Store rating and clear brand and engagement gains, helping boost the journal’s impact and digital reach.
