A Quantum Corporation Case Study
The University of San Diego, with nearly 98% of its servers virtualized, was struggling as legacy backup and DR systems couldn’t keep up with exploding data: full backups overlapped incrementals, VM restores from tape took hours or days, and NAS-based disk costs were escalating. The IT team needed faster, scalable VM protection that would reduce storage requirements and restore times without a major overhaul of existing processes.
USD deployed a Quantum DXi deduplication appliance (32TB deployed, scalable to 80TB) paired with Quantum vmPRO agentless VM backup software integrated with vCenter. The solution restored the backup window (gaining about two full days), delivered a 22:1 dedupe ratio (300TB of backups stored in roughly 14TB), enabled immediate VM recovery, reduced administrative overhead, and is projected to save more than $1 million over three years.
