University Hospital of South Manchester - Customer Case Study

The University Hospital of South Manchester (UHSM), a major teaching and research hospital serving 5,000+ users, faced growing backup and restore problems as it virtualized more systems—over 400 VMs and 200 TB of data managed by a three-person IT team. A piecemeal legacy environment with mixed backup targets and poor VM handling led to slow, risky restores and excessive time spent managing dozens of reports and disparate tools.

UHSM deployed Quantum DXi deduplication appliances, Quantum vmPRO for VMware, Vision monitoring, and Symantec Backup Exec, enabling on-disk deduplicated backups with automated replication to a second site. The result: economical long-term retention and DR without moving media off-site, native-format VM backups for near-instant restores, consolidated reporting that cut administration overhead dramatically, and a scalable, low-cost solution that met the hospital’s retention and growth needs.
