Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics - Customer Case Study

The SIB Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics (SIB) supports about 700 scientists across 60 groups and runs six sequencing centers that generate more than 30 TB of genomic and proteomic data every week. This rapid, sustained data growth—combined with the need to provide fast access for hundreds of researchers, long-term preservation for clinical-scale projects, and control of costs, energy and staff—created a pressing data-management and stewardship challenge.

SIB deployed Quantum StorNext scale-out storage with AEL6000/AEL500 tape archives to provide high-performance ingest, automated tiering from primary disk to tape, self-service access and multi-copy archival protection with Extended Data Life Management. The solution delivers nearly 1 PB of primary storage and 4 PB of tape archive, supports ~600 users, is managed by a single full‑time employee, and gives SIB scalable, cost‑effective long‑term preservation and rapid access to genomics data for decades.
