Aechelon Technology, a San Francisco–based provider of real-time image generation systems and geo-specific visual databases for military flight simulation, experienced rapid growth as it delivered higher-resolution, larger-area databases. That expansion—databases four times larger and a tripled modeling team—exposed limits in its direct‑attached storage: only one workstation could work on a project at a time, collaboration was difficult, and frequent copying tied up network bandwidth.

Aechelon deployed Quantum StorNext file‑system software with LSI and EMC disk arrays and a Quantum Scalar i500 tape library for backup. The centralized, high‑performance storage enabled concurrent access by multiple workstations, doubled workflow speed, allowed the company to manage four times more projects, increased detailed imagery capacity tenfold, and provided scalable, industrial‑strength backup for hundreds of terabytes.
