A Quantum Corporation Case Study
Santa Barbara City College had virtualized about 90% of its server environment, which created a backup “logjam.” The college was using VMware Consolidated Backup with scripts and tape-based NetBackup for retention, resulting in complex processes, two- to three-day full backups, no practical daily incrementals, and restores that could be delayed 24 hours for tape retrieval and then take hours to complete.
The college deployed Quantum vmPRO for VM protection and two DXi deduplication appliances (with NetBackup still protecting physical servers), writing backups directly to disk and replicating to an offsite DXi. The installation took hours and delivered a 90% reduction in backup window (full backups now 4–6 hours), enabled daily incrementals, cost-effective six-month disk retention via deduplication, instant offsite copies, eliminated tape handling, and reduced restores from days to minutes.
