Replicating Banks’ Mission-Critical Data with DXi Simplifies Operation, Improves Restores

Nihon Unisys provides BankVision, an open core banking hosting service for Japanese regional banks, and faced operational bottlenecks from a tape-based backup process that required daily tape handling, transportation and high administrative overhead. The company needed a disk-based solution that preserved existing NetBackup workflows and virtual tape library (VTL) behavior so staff wouldn’t have to change core operations.

Nihon Unisys deployed Quantum DXi6700 appliances (deduplication + replication, VTL/NAS) with Scalar i500 tape libraries and NetBackup integration. The DXi reduced backup data to about 7.5% of the original size (1/13), enabled WAN replication without daily tape transport, improved restore efficiency and increased the local restore window from one day to two, and cut tape management (about 200 fewer tapes at the first bank). The solution is now the standard backup system across ten regional banks, lowering operational workload and strengthening business continuity.
