A Quantum Corporation Case Study
EMIS Electrics, a medium-sized international engineering firm based in Lübbenau, Germany with over 460 employees across eight sites, faced a critical backup challenge: its growing backup volume exceeded storage capacity and it could no longer meet 90-day retention requirements. The company’s predominantly Linux and Novell environment and a distributed, multi-site VM estate (135 VMs) made finding a compatible, high-performance deduplication solution difficult.
After trials, EMIS deployed Quantum DXi virtual (V1000) and physical (DXi4701) deduplication appliances with a Quantum Scalar i40 tape library and SEP sesam backup software on Linux. The new setup delivered up to 9:1 deduplication (reducing required disk from 41.36 TB to 5.2 TB), cut the backup window by 30% (incrementals ~6.5 hours), enabled reliable off-site tape retention, and lowered storage, space and power costs while improving overall backup performance.
