Oxford University Press Effectively Controls its Digital Data Explosion with DXi and Scalar Solution

Oxford University Press, the world’s largest university press, was struggling with rapidly growing digital content and an aging tape backup system that led to long backup windows, unreliable jobs (one server took 36 hours), slow restores and rising media and administration costs. The existing process of removing media off-site after seven days further delayed access to older data and increased operational burden.

Oxford deployed a Quantum DXi6700 disk deduplication appliance for short-term retention, a Quantum Scalar i6000 tape library for long-term archiving, and HP Data Protector software. The combined solution delivered about 95% deduplication, cut disk backup requirements by up to 95%, boosted backup performance four-fold (up to 5.8 TB/hr), halved restore times, kept three months of backups on disk for fast restores, and lowered total cost of ownership while simplifying management.
