NIH Keeps Medical Imaging Healthy with StorNext Scale-out Storage

The National Institutes of Health Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences (RIS), supported by contractor MedData, faced rapidly growing imaging data—about 750 TB and rising ~10% monthly—from MRI, CT and other studies used by nearly 250 scientists across NIH. They needed a scalable, high‑performance, cross‑platform solution that could support concurrent access, integrate with PACS/DICOM and custom apps, and preserve research images indefinitely.

RIS deployed Quantum StorNext scale‑out storage with StorNext AEL500 tape archive, using tiered disk, LTO tape (including LTFS) and paths to object/cloud tiers to balance performance, access and cost. The result is high‑speed SAN/LAN shared access for hundreds of researchers, simplified administration and proactive support, a durable petascale archive with automated tape integrity checks, and seamless scalability that keeps research workflows fast and data preserved long term.
