A Quantum Corporation Case Study
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division (NSWCCD) faced a dramatic data challenge after upgrading its underwater sensor arrays: a 1,000× jump in data generation (up to 550,000 files and 3 TB per test) that had to be captured reliably within 3–20 minute test windows. The lab’s 2005 SAN was becoming a bottleneck, and any data loss or delay would force costly repeat tests and keep ships on site longer.
Quantum’s StorNext solution—deployed as a three‑tier StorNext file system with 240 TB of Aberdeen XDAS RAID, Fibre Channel networking, tape libraries and Symantec Backup Exec—provided fast, multi‑platform ingestion (Linux) with automated copying, Windows‑based analysis, and final archival storage. The architecture handled the 1,000× data increase, enabled 50% more daily throughput, eliminated slowdown risks (using StorNext affinity controls during rebuilds), ran the largest test flawlessly, and reduced ship downtime and overall project cost.
