NASA's Earth Observing System - Customer Case Study

Quantum provided data management software for NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) to address the growing challenge of storing and serving massive satellite data sets. EOSDIS ingests about 3 TB of new data daily, distributes 2 TB between data centers, and must manage millions of files across multiple media types in a resilient 24/7 environment—requirements that demanded a scalable, reliable storage architecture.

Quantum’s solution unified automated tape libraries, high-speed disk caching and SGI servers under a single, UNIX-style file interface so applications and users access tape-resident data as if it were online. The deployment delivered a high-performance, highly available system that maximizes storage efficiency and search/retrieval speed, making roughly 1.8 PB and about 22 million files available to the public while providing strong vendor support and operational resilience.
