Max Planck Institute for Chemistry - Customer Case Study

The Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, part of the Max Planck Society, faced rapidly growing, high-volume research data from projects like the Amazonian Tall Tower Observatory that can generate dozens of GBs per day. IT needed to provide simultaneous, multi‑platform access, eliminate backup bottlenecks, support a small central staff, and ensure long‑term protection and archiving without interrupting researchers’ workflows.

Working with integrator microstaxx, the institute deployed Quantum StorNext scale‑out storage with a Scalar i6000 tape library (and Fujitsu primary storage) to deliver fast, scalable capacity, shared file access across Linux/Windows/Mac, and policy‑driven background archiving. The result: storage can be provisioned in an afternoon, silos and backup windows were eliminated, long‑term data integrity is automated via Active Vault and EDLM, and researchers can focus on science without IT constraints.
