Leading Media Company Refreshes Xsan Environment with StorNext

Fairfax Media, a leading Australia-based publisher, needed to replace its aging Apple Xserve/Xsan environment after Apple changed its media workflow roadmap. The production team required high-performance, scalable shared storage for collaborative video editing, an open-system approach to avoid vendor lock-in, and a seamless migration that would not disrupt tight news-driven workflows or require staff retraining.

Fairfax deployed Quantum StorNext—Q‑Series disk (100 TB usable) with a StorNext M330 metadata appliance—integrated with existing Final Cut Pro suites and new Adobe workstations. The appliance-based rollout was completed in weeks with a weekend cutover, preserving tools and workflows with no downtime; the new platform supports Mac and Windows clients, enabled a 40% increase in weekly clip production, and set the company up for future expansion including tape-based StorNext archiving.
