A Quantum Corporation Case Study
The Hawaii State Department of Health’s Disease Outbreak Control Division (DOCD) needed a more reliable, lower‑overhead way to protect and retain critical public‑health data as its environment grew and moved heavily to VMware. Previously reliant on tape and older deduplication appliances, the team faced stretched backup windows, growing media-management costs, and a requirement to retain roughly 4.5 TB of daily backups for about 12 months while improving DR capabilities.
DOCD deployed Quantum DXi deduplication appliances (DXi6700 at the main site and DXi4700 as a remote replication target) together with Veeam for VMware. With >95% deduplication they achieved on‑disk 12‑month retention, daily WAN replication of backups, a NAS‑based archive partition to offload filers, and a much shorter backup window—eliminating tape handling, cutting admin time for DR to nearly zero, and providing easy capacity scalability.
