A Quantum Corporation Case Study
Daqing Oil Field Petroleum Exploration and Development Research Institute (EDRI) is a large state research institute supporting oil and gas exploration with nearly 1,800 technical staff and an HPC-heavy Geophysics Service Center. To accelerate 3D seismic pre‑stack time/depth migration and support growing datasets, its existing Linux cluster and single‑node NFS I/O servers hit performance bottlenecks and presented a single point of failure that limited concurrent access and large‑scale processing.
EDRI deployed Quantum StorNext (File System, DLC and Storage Manager) with a Scalar i2000 tape library alongside HP blade servers and Hitachi SAN storage to create a shared, load‑balanced cluster (698 servers, 1,444 CPUs, 10Gbps network, 400TB FC disk and 600TB tape). The new architecture eliminated the I/O bottleneck and single‑point failure, enabled simultaneous access by multiple I/O nodes and five seismic applications, increased processing throughput and resiliency, and added automated archival and offsite vaulting for large seismic datasets.
