Calgary Police Service - Customer Case Study

The Calgary Police Service faced a sudden petabyte-scale storage challenge when a new body‑worn camera program grew from an initial 50 cameras toward 1,500, producing roughly 2.3 GB per hour per camera and requiring multi‑year legal retention. Their existing disk‑based scale‑out NAS filled quickly, backups couldn’t complete, and a cost‑effective, secure way to ingest, retain and protect vast amounts of video was needed.

By upgrading and partitioning an existing Quantum Scalar i6000 tape library and adding StorNext scale‑out storage and automated tiering, CPS ingests video to high‑performance disk for 30‑day access while StorNext transparently archives two tape copies (one on‑site, one off‑site) with AES‑256 encryption and EDLM checks. The result: nearly a petabyte managed with about 240 TB of live disk, consolidated backup/archive operations, simplified file‑system access for users, full scalability and long‑term retention — at roughly half the cost of a disk‑only approach.
