A Quantum Corporation Case Study
Biola University, a private college serving about 6,000 students, faced rapidly escalating storage needs as its “Open Biola” video initiatives produced huge volumes of HD footage—roughly 5–10 TB of raw video plus another ~5 TB of edited files each semester—making disk-based storage and budgeting unsustainable and preventing departments from easily self-managing or protecting content.
The university deployed a Quantum Scalar LTFS appliance working with its existing Quantum Scalar i500 tape library, which presents tape as a simple file share for drag-and-drop archiving. The solution consolidated backup and archive workflows, reduced reliance on costly disk, saved IT time by enabling departmental self-management, improved content protection and geographic replication, and bent the storage cost curve enough that Biola plans to expand its use of tape.
