A Quantum Corporation Case Study
BBC Sport, with a content archive spanning more than 75 years, needed a production-grade digital library that put historical and recent footage instantly at the fingertips of journalists and producers for live and near-live broadcasting. The challenge was to replace a mix of systems with a single, high-performance environment that supports heavy transcoding, fast access to proxies and originals, and routine editorial use rather than a slow, passive archive.
Trams and Media Manor delivered a StorNext 5–powered, four-tier storage architecture (online high-performance and staging disk tiers, an LTO tape archive, and off‑site vaulting) providing over 5PB usable capacity, 6.4GB/s system bandwidth, automated policy-based LTO migration, EDLM self-healing and dual-copy resilience, and easy scalability to 10+PB. Deployed in January 2015, the solution unified administration, guaranteed performance, eliminated support touchpoints, and gave BBC Sport fast, reliable access to its full production archive for everyday use.
