Baylor College of Medicine - Customer Case Study

Baylor College of Medicine’s Human Genome Sequencing Center (HGSC) is a major genomics research hub that runs 32 sequencers producing up to ~1 TB of raw data per day. Its piecemeal, heterogeneous storage and network setup became a bottleneck for researchers and imposed heavy management overhead, while funding constraints required a solution that could leverage existing hardware and scale to an anticipated multi‑petabyte growth.

HGSC deployed Quantum StorNext (File System and Storage Manager) with a Scalar i2000 tape library, adding metadata controllers, SAN gateways and distributed LAN clients to centralize access and automate tiered storage. The implementation enabled simultaneous, high‑speed access for parallel analysis, automated archiving to tape for cost-effective retention, preserved legacy investments and cut management overhead — providing a scalable foundation to support immediate growth and an expected expansion to up to ~20 PB.
