A Quantum Corporation Case Study
Alfing Kessler Sondermaschinen (AKS), a global maker of specialized machine tools, and its sister company AMT faced failing backups as virtualization, 3D CAD and growing archives pushed their legacy tape-based system beyond capacity. Backups regularly exceeded the allowed window (peaking at over 72 hours), VM protection accounted for half the data and restores were slow and unreliable, leaving IT staff spending too much time on backup and recovery.
After a side-by-side trial, AKS implemented Quantum’s DXi inline-deduplication appliance and vmPRO (with Backup Exec and existing tape for long-term retention). The new disk-to-disk-to-tape solution delivers a 10x faster full backup (now 8–10 hours), VM restores in seconds, a 50% cut in admin time, and a 27:1 deduplication ratio (370 TB logical → 14 TB on disk), plus scalable growth and a smooth, week‑long deployment.
