Advancing Biosciences at The Scripps Research Institute—with Quantum Storage

The Scripps Research Institute, a leading non‑profit biomedical research organization, needed to replace a slow hierarchical storage system and refresh its backup infrastructure to support massive datasets (single genome ~200TB) and scale beyond 1PB. IT had to deliver higher performance, heterogeneous access for thousands of users, reliable disaster recovery, and cost‑effective long‑term storage while managing large backup windows (400TB full monthly, ~250TB daily incrementals).

The institute deployed Quantum StorNext multi‑tier storage (metadata and gateway appliances with QXS primary disk), Scalar i6000 tape libraries, and DXi deduplication appliances integrated with Veritas NetBackup. The solution now holds over 3PB in a single transparent namespace, speeds data access via 10GbE and StorNext DLC, supports Windows/Mac/Unix/Linux, protects backups with deduplication plus tape retention for three months, improves DR through policy‑driven replication, and reduces cost and energy use by leveraging tape.
