ACDI/VOCA, a Washington, D.C.–based nonprofit that promotes economic development worldwide, was burdened by an aging tape-based backup workflow that strained its two-person IT team. With more than 280 TB of data to protect, routine backups could take 4–5 days, nightly jobs frequently failed or required constant monitoring, and offsite tape archiving cost roughly $25,000 a year and manual intervention for disaster recovery.

ACDI/VOCA deployed Quantum’s Q-Cloud Protect Backup-as-a-Service alongside an on-premise DXi6702 appliance, vmPRO and Symantec Backup Exec. Deduplication reduced 280 TB to about 10.9 TB (~30:1), backups became up to 300% faster (file-server runs now 1–1.5 days, Exchange in ~30 minutes), recovery times improved by roughly 10x (example restores in minutes), and secure remote replication removed offsite tape handling—delivering similar costs to tape but far lower maintenance and much greater reliability.
