Maintaining Security for Always-On Services and Protecting Key Infrastructure Assets

The University of Westminster, a long-established London university with more than 20,000 students across four campuses, needed to maintain always-on services in a competitive higher-education market. Faced with a large, heterogeneous IT estate—about 700 servers and 4,000 workstations (nearly 5,000 assets)—the university’s piecemeal scanning approach left it with limited visibility and difficulty prioritising remediation of critical vulnerabilities.

The university deployed QualysGuard Vulnerability Management on the Qualys cloud platform to run daily, weekly and ad-hoc scans and to delegate scanning to system administrator asset owners. The solution delivered clear, actionable reports and automated workflows that improved visibility, helped prioritise high‑risk fixes, reduced the number of vulnerabilities, and saved time and resources without disrupting services or requiring capital investment.
