DC Migration Tips from a Fortune 500 Financial Company

A Fortune 500 financial company engaged QTS to migrate its international data centers out of in‑house facilities to reduce operational risk, support modern high‑density hardware, and improve resiliency and business continuity. The Director of International Data Centers led a vendor selection focused on geographic coverage, company stability, enhanced management tools, and the ability to meet a tight project timeframe; the team needed a partner that could handle higher power densities, mirrored network architectures, and a multi‑tiered migration plan.

The company selected QTS for its footprint, Service Delivery Platform, and operational flexibility, then executed a staged migration tied to a five‑year hardware refresh: seed new racks, establish mirrored A/B networks and infrastructure services, migrate pre‑production and contingency tiers first, then cut over production. The result was a successful consolidation from roughly 78,000 sq ft to about 30,000 sq ft (with a target of 10,000 sq ft in colocation), higher cabinet densities (15–16 kW), stronger redundancy and monitoring, and a durable vendor partnership that absorbed supply‑chain and scheduling challenges.
