Case Study: Ubuntu achieves converged cross-device experiences with Qt

A Qt Case Study

Preview of the Ubuntu Case Study

The #1 Linux Distro Is More Popular Than Ever — and on an Even Wider Range of Applications Than You Might Imagine

Ubuntu, delivered by Canonical, needed a way to provide a consistent user experience across smartphones, tablets, PCs, TVs, and IoT devices while lowering maintenance costs, reducing UI development time, and accessing enterprise-level support. To achieve this, Ubuntu relied on Qt as a core part of its display framework and developer tooling, including the Ubuntu SDK for device application developers.

Qt helped Ubuntu build a single, responsive software platform with native-speed UI components and Qt Quick/QML-based access to system APIs across multiple form factors. The result was a future-proof, production-ready foundation for converged computing and IoT, including Ubuntu Core for devices such as kiosks, digital signage, smart mirrors, industrial systems, and fitness equipment, with maintenance costs reduced to less than supporting a single target platform.
