Specsavers Optical Group expands GUI testing to 50 application variants with Qt

Specsavers Optical Group, a major optical retailer with extensive in-house software, required a robust automated testing framework. Their challenge was to find a GUI testing tool that could integrate with HP Quality Center/ALM, work on both Linux and Windows, and support a keyword-driven approach so staff without scripting experience could create tests. They partnered with SQS, who evaluated tools on their behalf and selected Qt's Squish.

The solution implemented by Qt involved using Squish for its record and playback functionality, HP ALM integration, and support for multiple GUI toolkits. This allowed SQS to build a framework where testers could drive tests by simply populating spreadsheets. The results were highly successful, with over 2,600 test cases created for three applications, significantly improved test reliability, and a more economic automation process. The project proved so effective that plans were expanded from testing 3 applications to eventually testing 50 important application variants using the Qt solution.
