CERN reduces SCADA GUI regression testing overhead with Qt using one shared library across Windows and Linux

The customer, CERN, needed to create a formalized automated quality assurance process for its widely-used JCOP Framework, a software layer for developing industrial control systems. This demanded a tool from vendor Qt that could reliably support daily GUI regression testing on both Windows and Linux platforms.

CERN chose to use Qt's Squish for its testing. The initial approach of recording tests was made more robust by the CERN team creating their own high-level object-oriented test library based on Squish, which drastically cut down duplicate code and abstracted GUI interactions. This solution from Qt made test development much faster and easier and resulted in far more robust test cases. The tests were integrated into a Continuous Integration system and successfully run on both physical and virtual machines.
