A Qstream Case Study
Inova Fairfax Medical Center’s Advanced Surgical Technology and Education Center (ASTEC), a Level 1 trauma center, faced the challenge of keeping an interdisciplinary operating room team—surgeons, nurses, anesthetists and residents—current on large volumes of perioperative safety and clinical knowledge while demonstrating compliance and improving patient safety. The hospital also needed to support surgical residents’ performance on the national SCORE curriculum and the ABSITE surgical skills exam.
ASTEC deployed four Qstream mobile, game-based programs that push scenario-based challenges to clinicians’ devices on a regular cadence, covering universal OR protocols, fire safety and exam-focused surgical knowledge (with MRSA and simulation fundamentals in development). The approach increased clinician engagement through leaderboards and brief, non-disruptive challenges, produced actionable analytics for supervisors, and—according to Qstream—has been shown in trials to boost retention and change practice patterns to improve outcomes; IFMC also reported improved exam preparedness and enthusiastic staff adoption.
