Idea Crowdsourcing at MARTA Encouraging Innovation in the Public Sector

MARTA, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, is one of the largest transit agencies in the United States, serving Atlanta with rail and bus service and facing ongoing resource shortages that made it difficult to move projects through the pipeline. To improve customer-centric innovation, MARTA turned to Qmarkets and its idea management platform to gather feedback from both employees and riders on transit improvements, including a major new rail car procurement.

Using Qmarkets, MARTA launched its “Your Ride, You Decide” crowdsourcing program to collect ideas and votes on rail car interior and exterior design features from internal groups, the Riders’ Advisory Council, and nearly 4,000 riders. The campaigns generated 34,000 votes and helped shape the final rail car designs, while also producing actionable ideas such as a new crosswalk near a station; MARTA says Qmarkets made it easier to engage the public, respond to ideas, and move innovations forward.
