A Qlik Case Study
Javier Leon, an adjunct professor and marketing manager at Amazon Produce, faced two related challenges: teaching students practical business intelligence (BI) skills and making a complex produce supply chain more proactive and transparent. Amazon Produce—one of the largest mango importers in the U.S., managing over 50 growers and many retailer requirements—found Excel workflows couldn’t reveal linked variables or explain why shipments underperformed. In the classroom, Leon also wanted students to graduate with hands-on experience that employers value.
He addressed both problems by adopting Qlik—using Qlik’s Academic Program for student training and building a company-wide Qlik analytics project for sales and grower relations. After interviews and collaborative design sessions, Leon developed visualizations and rolled out the solution in about nine months. Students now build real-world portfolios (often dozens of visualizations via exercises like #MakeoverMonday), improving employability, while Amazon Produce teams gain live performance dashboards that empower data-driven decisions, better explain supply-chain outcomes to growers, and lay the groundwork for integrating external data (weather, census, exporter associations) for deeper insight.
