Jefferson Health confronted the nationwide opioid epidemic by putting data and cross-disciplinary teams at the center of its response. The challenge was to gain real-time, organization-wide visibility into complex prescribing patterns spread across multiple EHRs—tracking high-risk measures like prescriptions longer than seven days, orders over 100 pills, and patients with multiple opioid orders within 30 days—so clinicians, pharmacy, administration and public-health partners could act.
The team built a web-based analytics application using Qlik Sense to consolidate EHR data into a high-level dashboard with drilldowns, provider- and patient-level views, and MEDD calculations. The platform enabled workflow fixes and targeted education, identified patients with risky prescribing, and let clinicians intervene; a pilot change to shorter default prescription durations produced a 50% drop in prescriptions over seven days (Jan–Mar), while improving training and ongoing monitoring across the system.
