Breaking Down Single-Person Data Dependencies at Tasmania Health

Tasmania’s Department of Health, responsible for statewide hospital and public health services, faced a critical data challenge: analytics were siloed and dependent on individual “data gurus” in each region, creating single points of failure and preventing cohesive, timely insight. When the organization moved from QlikView to Qlik Sense and reorganized in 2016, the need to centralize data, mature its analytics culture, and overcome resistance to change became urgent.

The department built a centralized BI model: Front Door, a web-based data request system to manage and triage needs, and SIMON, a Qlik Sense–based portal of real-time dashboards supported by a multidisciplinary team. The change removed single-person dependencies, replaced paper reports with live dashboards used in daily clinical huddles (and rapidly adapted during COVID), improved patient-flow visibility and decision-making, and established a trusted, scalable analytics capability.
