Austin Fire Department uses QlikView to improve operations, performance, and service

Austin Fire Department (AFD) serves more than 750,000 residents in Austin, TX and responds to about 75,000 calls a year. Faced with economic pressure to increase efficiency, AFD struggled with operational data scattered across multiple systems and no easy way to extract, integrate, or analyze daily performance information to support decisions.

AFD deployed QlikView as a fast, in-memory BI solution—rolling out a 12-week pilot to 16 users that consolidated over 10 GB of data without a data warehouse. The department gained real‑time visibility across operations, finance and HR, used data to reallocate apparatus and resolve interjurisdictional disputes, and saved an estimated 300 staff hours annually (about $131,000) plus $43,000 in training costs, while enabling fact-based decision making and a planned wider rollout.
