Seastar Publications Inc., publisher of the regional magazine Coastal Woman, was running its ad-sales commissions on Excel spreadsheets and faced cash-flow and timing problems: commissions were paid whether or not advertiser invoices were paid, and reps often waited up to three months after a sale to receive payment.
