QArea worked with NowThis News, a U.S.-based media company, to build a web portal for video news materials that would provide smooth access from any mobile device. The challenge was to deliver a fast, convenient news experience with additional functionality such as event mapping, video-related questionnaires, offline playback, and always-available notifications.
QArea implemented a Django- and MySQL-based solution with AWS S3, Akamai video delivery, jQuery, REST/JSON integration, JWPlayer, Google Maps, and push notifications via APNS, GCM, and Urbanairship. The project also included native apps and social network integrations. As a result, NowThis News achieved roughly 500,000 to 1,000,000 downloads, a 4.0 Google Play rating, 87% satisfaction, a 57% mobile app conversion rate, and a 7% decrease in bounce rate.
